SARKAR RAJ is a success

SARKAR RAJ is a success

Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network

SARKAR RAJ has turned out to be a success at the box office. Even though some media reports have been questioning the film's pull, especially after a huge number of prints that the film was released at, the fact remains that over 23 crores coming in the first week means that at the least SARKAR RAJ would prove to be an average success at the box office.

The kind of collections that have poured in for the film aren't mind blowing but they are nowhere near being poor. In fact for a change, most of the reports too have been guarded as no one from the trade has stood up and called the film as a failure. The talks have mainly been centered around 'Why didn't the film take an earth shattering start in spite of featuring the towering trio from the Bachchan family'.

While in case of RAM GOPAL VARMA KI AAG, it was crystal clear after the first show itself that the film was a failure, and hence everyone associated with it - especially Ramu - was pulled down, SARKAR RAJ has troubled a few in a different way. Because the film didn't under perform in a way as some would have expected, the focus shifted on - 'Collections are good but not very good'!

However, most seem to be ignoring an all important point that Ram Gopal Varma has finally managed to end his poor box office run with SARKAR RAJ which now happens to be the biggest first week money spinner of his career. In fact the film has even created city records at a few centers that seem to have gone unnoticed by majority of trade pundits.

Says a prominent distributor on condition of anonymity, "There is a definite tirade out there that wants the world to believe that distributors are loosing sleep over SARKAR RAJ. No, we are not. The film has earned us the moolah and the kind of subject it comes with, you can't expect a slam-bang job where a film earns over the first weekend and disappears. The film has entered the second week in a strong position as well and we don't foresee anything much fall in days to come."

Well, with MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP not quite taking a thunderous opening that could steal away a lot from SARKAR RAJ, looks like Ramu, Bachchan and Co. may eventually have the final smile, if not a roaring laugh!

Bollywood power couple Abhishek & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan become residents of Sanctuary Falls in Dubai

Bollywood celebrity couple Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has acquired a villa at the prestigious Sanctuary Falls, a resort-style villa community within Jumeirah Golf Estates being developed by Shaikh Holdings.

Following in the footsteps of international celebrity couples such as David & Victoria Beckham, Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt, that have acquired property in Dubai, Abhishek and Aishwarya now own a luxury villa in Dubai.
Abhishek & Aishwarya Rai
with the Shaikh Family

At an exclusive "Residents’ Party" on Friday night, May 30 at the 7-star Burj Al Arab hotel, Abhishek and Aishwarya were present as new owners of a villa in the Sanctuary Falls development and were introduced to future neighbours by the property's developers, Shaikh Holdings.

Although no details were divulged on the couple's new home, which is expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2010, Sanctuary Falls is a collection of 96 resort style villas in a secure double-gated community and overlooks the Earth golf course designed by Greg Norman. The community features five and six bedroom villas, ranging from 5,600 to 10,600 square feet, with villa prices from USD 4 million to USD 10 million.

"I don't think we choose a place, I believe a place chooses you," said Abhishek with a broad smile on being asked why Dubai and why Sanctuary Falls. He added, “We saw the Sanctuary Falls project and the facilities and just knew that we had to be a part of it.” The couple looked relaxed despite a hectic past week, which included a visit to the Cannes Film Festival and a three-hour walk to Mumbai's Siddhivinayak temple. They also displayed no signs of anxiety ahead of Sarkar Raj's release this week, in which Aishwarya joins Abhishek and father-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan, on screen.

"I don't think I've ever been nervous or stressed out before a film's release," said Aishwarya. Dressed in an Indian kurta, Aishwarya held onto Abhishek for most of the evening and did most of the talking when interacting with the small gathering of guests at the reception.

When asked whether the couple would be looking to move to Dubai, Abhishek was quick to dismiss any suggestion of a shift. "We live in Mumbai and work out of Mumbai. As our whole family is in the acting profession, all our jobs are in Mumbai," he said. "I'm quite sure we'll be spending more weekends here though," Aishwarya said with a giggle.

As visible public figures who generate constant media interest, Abhishek described privacy as "super precious" and added that in the selection of their new home, the couple's concerns towards security and privacy ranked extremely high.

"I'd say it was probably the most important factor for us. Especially the security aspect. As for our public status, we respect the fact that we're public figures and are aware of the enormous responsibility that comes with it and also realise that we owe our current status to the audiences that love us. But, our privacy is very dear to us," he said.

Describing Dubai as a special place, Aishwarya recalled the premiere of her film ‘Provoked’ in the presence of Amitabh Bachchan during the 2006 IIFA awards. "I always have fond memories of Dubai and I'm looking forward to enjoying more special moments during weekend getaways,” she said with a smile.

"Dubai is special to us not just as a place where we enjoy great warmth and generosity in terms of love and acceptance from the people, but it's become a remarkable city and one that's so close to home," Abhishek added.

"We're a normal couple and are part of a normal family,” Aishwarya said. "It's very important to us that home is a space where we can enjoy every moment together with the family."

Shaikh Holdings has offered all owners the opportunity to customize their home experience. Abhishek and Aishwarya too have selected from a range of traditional, modern and contemporary architectural styles, interior finishes and kitchen designs. In terms of amenities, the developer will be providing the homes with fully landscaped gardens, arrival water fountains, resort style swimming pools, Scavolini designer kitchens and Bang & Olufsen home theatre systems. If that’s not enough, the couple will be able to enjoy views of lakes, waterfalls and the golf course throughout the community.

“As we lay down the foundations of our villas, so too are we laying down the roots of our community. It is people that bring life to a community, and the Residents’ Party was a great

way to bring everyone together, as we strengthen old relationships and welcome new residents,” said Imran Shaikh, Chief Executive Officer, Shaikh Holdings.

Shaikh Holdings is a developer of luxury communities focused on golf, waterfront and themed concepts. Sanctuary Falls will be a landmark villa community set amidst lush golf vistas and inspiring lakes. The community is set on the Earth golf course, which was recently announced as the chosen venue for the richest golf tournament in the world, the Dubai World Championship starting in 2009.
“We are especially excited to welcome the Bachchan family to their home in the Sanctuary Falls community and hope that it will provide their family with the perfect home away from home,” added Shamrez Shaikh, Chief Operations Officer, Shaikh Holdings.

Is brand Bachchan working for Sarkar Raj?

The much-hyped Sarkar Raj is about to complete one week at the marquee. The jury is still out on whether RGV's 'comeback flick' is a hit or a flop. Sarkar Raj has a slew of pluses, the entire Bachchan family, a well-oiled publicity machine and no big releases to contend with. So what's wrong with the movie?

Some reports say multiplexes recorded 50% occupancy on opening day. But ET.com reader Jitaditya from Delhi says “I watched it on a Friday evening and it was almost 100% occupied. Another reader, Guru, from the US says, "The Friday show was full even in Phoenix, Arizona. We couldn't get a ticket because the show was full. I strongly feels this movie will be a super hit.”

Others express big disappointment and one reader even compares Sarkar Raj to the dismal Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag . Did expectations from the combined Bachchan clan fail to reach its peak? Was Aishwarya Rai Bachchan the best choice to play the ruthless businesswoman with a golden heart?

Some would say she looked a tad podgy and the slick hairstyle and wardrobe failed to cover it up. Perhaps Priyanka Chopra or even Vidya Balan would have been a better choice. Where was the fire in Aishwarya when she tries to convince Sarkar about the positives of the power plant? Or the emotion when she is told by Sarkar that her father has been killed in the UK by his men?

But why blame just Aishwarya? Perhaps the plot itself is weak. A reader from Dubai says there is no character-building and the storyline is suspect. The music is jarring and there is no creative thought. As ET.com reader Ashish from Mumbai says, “If you must copy Godfather, at least do it well.”

What about Abhishek Bachchan? He looks intense, but somewhere one wonders if RGV has given him the short shrift while building his father and wife. Shankar’s character never grows in the film. Abhishek Bachchan made a mark in Sarkar . As the US-returned Shankar Nagre who takes over the reigns from Sarkar and begins his own tryst with politics, Abhishek Bachchan was appreciated as much as his father. In Sarkar Raj , Abhishek fails to live up to his own act in Sarka r, and comes nowhere close to surpassing it.

Where is the earlier Shankar Nagre? The body language and the attitude are missing and so is the attitude. As ET.com reader Shafi Patel from UK, says, "Abhishek may be talented, but at the moment he is not worth the money."

Sarkar Raj is essentially an Abhishek Bachchan film since he has more screen time than the other two Bachchans. Not that it is all a wasted effort. Some readers say he did a good job, like the scene in which he comes face to face with his father after losing his wife to a bomb blast or his introduction where he rests the teacup on the table.

Is Amitabh Bachchan the only redeeming factor in this film? Some readers say a nasal twang does not qualify as great acting! Amitabh Bachchan has long dialogues in Sarkar Raj and none other would have held his own as the Big B. Our readers say the film is ‘working’ in smaller cities. The theatres are drawing a good crowd.

What more were we expecting from Sarkar Raj ? On-screen chemistry between Ash and Abhi? Alas, their scenes in most part are bland and the famous off-screen hand-holding, just turns lame on screen.

Will Sarkar Raj still deliver that killer punch? The jury is out and only time and BO collections would tell.

Sarkar Raj fails to capture Box Office

The much-hyped, keenly-anticipated Sarkar Raj hasn't taken the domestic box-office by storm, except in a few circuits. The film didn't open to the desired response. And this did catch a lot of people by surprise.

In fact, the not-as-expected opening of Sarkar Raj was the topic of discussion at the IIFA weekend in Bangkok.

In view of the fact that Sarkar had fetched an excellent start, one expected Sarkar Raj to open equally well, somewhere in the 90 per cent + range.

The response to Sarkar Raj at big centres was heartening till Sunday, but Monday onwards, a drastic fall was witnessed everywhere. Single screens and smaller centres were down on Day 1 itself.

Mumbai-Maharashtra and South belt should earn profits. In other circuits, it would swing between average and losing.

Sarkar Raj Review

New Delhi: Sarkar Raj, the new RGV film on a shrewd businesswoman's plan to build a power plant caught up in development politics, is drawing comparisons with the controversy behind the failed Indian project of US utilities giant Enron.

The film, starring the Bachchans, has an uncanny resemblance to the real-life drama involving powerful politician Balasaheb Thackeray, whose party opposed a $2.8 billion power plant built by Enron in the 1990s.

The controversy surrounding the private power plant, India's largest then, highlighted the politics of development and the difficulties of doing business in a country replete with corruption, political intimidation and red tape.

Director Ram Gopal Varma, however, said neither Thackeray nor Enron inspired Sarkar Raj which opens on Friday.

"There is politics, but it's not entirely a political film," he said.

"When you make a realistic film, there is bound to be some reference point in existing characters and the existing issue,” he added.

Sarkar Raj, billed as a sequel to Sarkar released three years ago, picks up on the life of Subhash Nagre, a charismatic, grey-haired leader played by Amitabh Bachchan, who like Thackeray, is not in government but wields enormous influence through an army of die-hard followers.

Not much in the film's Mumbai moves without the consent of Nagre, a figure shrouded in a Godfather-like mystique. He is approached by the London-based CEO of a power firm, who realises his blessings are vital to setting up the plant. Bachchan's son, Abhishek, plays his on-screen son, Shankar.

The female lead, who Varma insisted was not inspired by Enron CEO Rebecca Mark, is played by Abhishek's wife, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Enron's Mark often negotiated with Thackeray to save the controversial power plant, which was closed down in 2001, the year the US firm went bankrupt after an accounting scandal.

Thackeray's party said the deal was opaque and did not benefit locals. Similarly, Nagre is against the project, which becomes a political minefield, but his foreign-educated, son, partly influenced by the CEO's charms, persuades him to give the power plant a chance.

Sequels are dicey business. No matter how much you improvise on your new script, you cannot escape comparisons. And when you attempt a sequel of a critically acclaimed film that's a huge box-office grosser as well, it's akin to walking on a tight rope.

Most importantly, post Ramgopal Varma ki Aag, Ramgopal Varma was everyone's favorite punching bag (till Tashan dethroned RGV ki Aag) “Finished”, “spent force”, “has-been”, “Pack up” were commonly used terms for RGV.

Now here's great news! Sarkar Raj supersedes the prequel and most importantly, RGV bounces back like never before. If you felt Shiva and later Satya were his finest efforts, you've got to watch Sarkar Raj. An outstanding film in all respects, this film has all it takes to emerge a major success story at the box-office… and a landmark film in everyone's careers.

Read Sonia Chopra's review of Sarkar Raj | All about Sarkar Raj

When Anita [Aishwarya Rai Bachchan], CEO of Sheppard Power Plant, an international company, brings a power plant proposal to set up in rural Maharashtra before the Nagres, insightful Shankar [Abhishek Bachchan] is quick to realise the benefits the power plant can bring to the people.

After convincing Sarkar [Amitabh Bachchan], who is against it for various reasons, Shankar undertakes a journey along with Anita to the villages of Maharashtra to mobilise support from the masses.

However, things are not what they seem to be and Shankar's dream project gradually becomes a political minefield. The evil forces, mightier than ever, mushroom and gang up to bring down the regime of Sarkar and obliterate Shankar's name from the political horizon.

Sarkar Raj exudes a lot of power from the word 'Go'. But let's not categorize Sarkar Raj as yet another “political film”. Emotions and relationships run concurrently in those 2+ hours. What works in favor of Sarkar Raj is its tight writing. It's not difficult to decipher the power play, but more importantly, there's meat in the script. It leaves you awe-struck as the plot thickens. The film throws a number of surprises, but the best is reserved for the penultimate 20/25 minutes. The culmination to the story is simply fantastic!

RGV shines like never before. He takes to SARKAR RAJ with a vengeance. He has to prove that the sequel is better, he has to prove the detractors wrong too. While RGV has handled the subject with great expertise, you cannot ignore a few scenes that leave a lasting impact...
Ash's first meeting with the Bachchans to explain the power project.
Govind Namdev trying to bribe Abhishek.
The Bachchans' visit to Dilip Prabhawalkar's residence.
The Bachchans' discussion over Kay Kay [who was shot dead by Abhishek in the prequel].
The turning point in the film [not to be disclosed].
The penultimate reels when the real culprit stands exposed. It hits you like a ton of bricks.

Besides its strong content, Sarkar Raj has been filmed exceptionally well too. In fact, the film has the trademark RGV stamp in every sequence.

The review would be incomplete without giving the due credit to writer Prashant Pandey's incredible and almost flawless script. Amar Mohile's background score is topnotch. The by-now-famous 'Govinda' chant in the background only enhances the impact. Amit Roy's cinematography is exceptional. The DoP succeeds in giving the film the raw-n-rustic look, which works very well. Action (Allan Amin), in minimal doses, is perfect.

Sarkar Raj is embellished with superb performances! Amitabh Bachchan, expectedly, comes up with a terrific performance. He's as ferocious as a wounded tiger in the finale and takes the film to great heights.

First Yuva, then Guru, now Sarkar Raj. Abhishek Bachchan is cast opposite the finest actor of this country, yet he sparkles in every sequence.

This time, the father and son go neck to neck as far as acting honors go. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is fabulous and delivers her career-best performance in Sarkar Raj. Enough has been written about her looks, but not much space has been devoted to her performances. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Provoked, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar and now Sarkar Raj - she's only got better with every film.

Every supporting actor in Sarkar Raj stands out - Dilip Prabhawalkar [superb], Govind Namdev [first-rate], Sayaji Shinde [perfect], Ravi Kale [terrific] and Supriya Pathak [good]. Tanisha is alright. The actor enacting the role of Dilip Prabhawalkar's grandson makes a strong impact.

On the whole, Sarkar Raj is an exceptional film in all respects. At the box-office, it has all it takes to set new records in days to come!

After Marrige Aish Vs Abhi on the silver screen

It's RGV's most anticipated film of the year. Abhi-Ash's first film together post Marrige and one of Amitabh's best roles ever, yes Sarkar Raj. Incidentally, Ramu wanted that the scene they first shoot after marriage should be the scene where Abhi and Ash are striking a conversation for the first time and trying to know each other.

Aish & Abhi at Red Carpet on "CANNES" Festival

The Bollywood newlywed couple, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan are in Cannes. Aish is there as part of the team of models for cosmetics giant L’Oreal. She and Abhishek were on the red carpet for Wednesday’s opening night screening of “My Blueberry Nights“.

Bachchan Vs Kapoor: The I-Day clash!

download DRONA wallpapers

download DRONA wallpapers

The scions of perhaps two of the biggest families of Hindi cinema, which draw their lineage from the likes of the original showman, (late) Raj Kapoor and the megastar Amitabh Bachchan, are all set to take on each other. To the film buffs it must be obvious that we are referring to the hot ' n' happening Aby's Baby, Abhishek Bachchan and Rishi and Neetu Kapoor's teenage heartthrob son, Ranbir Raj Kapoor. The films in question are Goldie Behl's SFX extravaganza, DRONA and Siddharth Raj Anand's, BACHNA AE HASEENO, both of which are now all set to release on 15th August 2008.

As per our trade sources, till a couple of weeks back there were chances that EROS International, the worldwide distributors of the Abhishek-Priyanka starrer DRONA may move ahead to avoid the unnecessary clash.

However, sources at EROS have decided to stick to the original schedule, in order to take advantage of the Independence Day weekend, which also has the additional 'raksha bandhan' holiday. They believe that though the one film old Ranbir Kapoor has a lot of potential but he will not be so much of a threat to the already established star, Abhishek Bachchan. Moreover, both the movies are as different as chalk and cheese and hence will not cut into each other's business.

Well, our best wishes to both the films and the usual formality of the disclaimer- Release dates can change even at the eleventh hour!

Abhishek Bachchan is the son of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and actress turned politician Jaya Bhaduri. His grandfather, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a well-known poet of Urdu and Hindi literature. The original last name of Abhishek's parental family is Srivastav, Bachchan being the pen name used by his grandfather. However, when his father Amitabh entered films, he did so under his father's pen name. He is of Punjabi Sikh heritage from his grandmother Teji's side, while also of Bengali Kulin Brahmin descent from his mother Jaya Bhaduri's side.

Abhishek was dyslexic as a child which he overcame.[1] He attended Jamnabai Narsee School and Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai, Modern School in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, and Aiglon College in Switzerland. He then went to the U.S. to complete his education at Boston University but then left the course mid-way to pursue his acting career when his father's company ABCL was facing trouble.

Abhishek Bachchan (Hindi: अभिषेक बच्चन, born 5 February 1976 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) is an award-winning Indian actor. He is the son of Indian actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. His wife is former Miss World turned actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Bachchan made his debut with J.P. Dutta's Refugee (2000). After that, his career consisted of films that went un-noticed at the box office.
